How to Avoid Used iPhone Scams in South Africa

Used iPhones are one of the most scammed categories on Facebook Marketplace and OLX in South Africa — and it's not close. Fake listings, stolen devices, iCloud-locked phones, and straightforward "pay first, phone never arrives" schemes are common enough that most buyers know someone who's been burned. Here's what to actually check before you hand over your money.

1. Ask for proof the phone is unlocked — from iCloud and the network

The single biggest risk with a used iPhone is buying one that's still linked to someone else's Apple ID via Find My iPhone. If it is, the seller (or a scammer who sold you a stolen phone) can remotely lock you out at any time — permanently. Before paying, insist on seeing Settings > [Name] > Find My showing the device is signed out, or better, watch it get signed out in front of you or on a live video call. Never accept "I'll remove it after payment" — that's the scam, not an oversight.

2. Check the IMEI before you pay, not after

Every iPhone has a unique IMEI number (dial *#06# to see it). South African networks and several free online tools let you check whether an IMEI is blacklisted, reported stolen, or still under contract. A seller who refuses to give you the IMEI ahead of payment, or gets cagey when you ask, is a red flag on its own.

3. Be suspicious of prices that are too good

A genuine iPhone 11 Pro selling for a third of the going rate isn't a "steal" — it's bait. Scammers price aggressively specifically to create urgency and stop you from doing due diligence. If a deal looks too good, assume it's because something is wrong with the phone, or the phone doesn't exist at all.

4. Never pay via EFT to a stranger before seeing the device

The classic Marketplace scam: agree on a price, get sent "banking details," pay via EFT, and the seller disappears. Cash on collection, or payment only after physically inspecting the device (and ideally through a platform with buyer protection), removes almost this entire category of scam. If a seller pressures you to pay upfront before meeting or before seeing the phone, walk away.

5. Insist on seeing the actual device, not stock photos

Reverse image search any listing photos that look suspiciously polished — a shocking number of "for sale" photos on Marketplace are stolen from real retailers. Ask for a photo or video of the specific phone, with today's date written on paper next to it, or a live video call showing the actual unit.

6. Check battery health before you commit

A phone can look brand new and still have a battery health in the 60-70% range. 7. Meet in a safe, public location — or don't meet at all

If you're buying from an individual seller, meet in a bank foyer, mall security office, or a designated "safe trade zone" if your area has one — never at an isolated address a stranger gave you over WhatsApp.
